This is going to be a bit of a rant, but I wanted to share the reason why I love Guild Wars 2 compared to thousands of different MMOs, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. I'm going to describe several reasons why :
- The unique, amazing painting-like graphic
When your usual MMORPGs have either anime, realistic-looking, or cartoonish art styles, Guild Wars 2 slams the table with a very unique paint-like style. It actually immerses you more than the usual, realistic-looking art style. Actually, I think Guild Wars 2's art style trumps most other MMORPGs with their boring, copy-paste style.
- Very rewarding exploration
Exploration in Guild Wars isn't just unlocking certain parts of the map hidden by the fog. It actually feels like an adventure, something I haven't experienced in any MMORPG since Ultima Online. A hidden cave -- a hidden underwater cave, even -- is always tempting you to come explore inside. And once you do, and after probably exterminating almost all of the cave dwellers, you will emerge on some other side of the map. It feels really great.
You get rewards, you get loots, and you're guaranteed to experience tons of dynamic events, some you might have never tried even with four years of continuous playing. I know I do.
As a side note, even playing for only 30 minutes a day still nets you some gold or other currency, so you can upgrade your characters, never mind your playing time a day.
Guild Wars 2 doesn't just have the boring class archetypes of Warrior, Archer, and Mage. Each class has its own mechanics, strengths, and weaknesses. Mesmers have illusions to help them defeat enemies, which can be shattered in a glorious explosion. Thieves don't have cooldowns, but have an iniative system similar to MP in RPG games. Rangers can tame wild animals, which they can then use as loyal pets -- even a dragon.
If someone ever asks me where to find the loveliest people this side of the Earth, I would point them at Guild Wars 2. Seriously, this game's community is awesome. Shocking, compared to hundreds of online games I've played. People actually answers questions and seems genuinely wanting to help you. Sure, there's a few thorny pricks here and there, but they are far and between.
- Other quality of life features
Buy once and play forever (no subscription!) business model, different PvP and PvE balance, great support system, most items are account bound, etc. Those QoL features are rarely seen in other MMORPGs -- especially the account bound items. Very few games are as accomodating to altoholic as Guild Wars 2.
And that's why I'm very fond of Guild Wars 2. Of course, there are more reasons, but it's going to take me the better part of the day if I continue. Thanks for reading!
